Performance

Live pieces where the code is the instrument. Most are written in ChucK and ChuGL and performed with an ensemble; the visuals are generated in the same program that makes the sound.

Weave

ChucK / ChuGL performance — June 2026

You are only one individual. But together you can weave something that withstands time.

Presented at Stanford Laptop Orchestra at Bing Concert Hall (2026), The Internet Archive, and Shanghai Baixin Bookstore, Weave is a performance piece that asks how we might stand together and face the ongoing disruptions in our world. Physical threads become virtual threads and sounds, transcending space and time.

Coded with AIK2. Performed with AIK2, Alex, Anthony, Heloise, Summer, and Siqi.

The recording of Weave begins at 30:04.

Warp 10

ChucK / ChuGL performance — May 2026

Captain’s Log, Stardate 53247.3. We are down to a skeleton crew. Morale is low after the accident. Diagnostic checks report that the navigation system malfunctioned twice during yesterday’s journey, but our remaining engineer reports that recent inspection shows all systems functioning as expected. This discrepancy is troubling, but we are in the final stretch of reaching Slorkus, so we must push forward … the mission cannot fail.

Presented at Tiat Salon #17 and the Slorkastic Chamber Music Orchestra (2026), Warp 10 is a piece that shows you both the awe and the horror of space travel.

Coded, polished, and performed with Ben Hoang and Gregg Oliva.

Self-Censorship

ChucK / ChuGL performance — February 2026

Write anything in this terminal; write as much as you want. But be aware the words might disappear. And the best part is, you don’t know which word would get removed, for what reason, and if it will ever come back.

Self-Censorship is a live musical and textual environment based on ChAI (AI in ChucK), where typing becomes performance and erasure becomes sound. Within the work, users are granted maximum freedom to type anything into a terminal interface, while confronting the persistent risk that the input words may be algorithmically erased.

The piece came out of reflecting on the doctrinality of societies. It is an emotional reaction to the restraints placed upon us, implicitly or explicitly, by customs and rules. Here the machine is invited to co-create by playing a vicious character, replicating a partial truth of the system we live in.

The Three Fates

ChucK / ChuGL code installation — October 2025

The Three Fates is a ChucK audiovisual interactive program. Functionally it reflects time-based and spectral-based waveforms, as well as their history. Aesthetically it narrates the notion of life, death, and time.

In Greek mythology, three sister goddesses together determine the fate of mortals. Clotho, the Spinner, spins the thread of life; Lachesis, the Allotter, measures its length and trials; and Atropos, the Inflexible, cuts it with her shears to end a life. Together they are known as the Three Fates, or Moirai.

W4ll

Max/MSP patch performance — December 2022

Presented at the Grant Recital Hall, Brown University, W4ll is a Max/MSP endeavour made in collaboration with MC (yes, another MC). The work explores the physical and emotional isolation experienced during and after the pandemic. Each knocking pattern on this concrete block wall triggers a different audiovisual response. The name “W4ll” abstracts the physical installation, signifying that it embodies more than a singular concept.
